Before soap, olive oil and sand was used to to exfoliate and cleanse the skin until it was discovered that a simple mixture could be made from natural resources.

Throughout Roman myths, a mountain named Mount Sapo is mentioned often. On this mountain animals were sacrificed. This is where soap gained its name but also where a small discovery happened.  When it would rain, the animal fat would wash into the ashes of the dead sacrificial fire. This mixture they discovered has a cleansing agent known as soap.

Today we use similar materials to make soap but we use a different method to make soap. There are hot and cold process soap. Cold process deals with lye and the physical reaction between lye and the fats in order to create soap. Hot process is when pre-made bars or scraps of soap are melted down to make a new bar. Essential oils are most commonly used to scent bars. Micas and oxides can be used for coloring soap along with other natural products. Different additives like seeds, leaves, peels, loofa and much more can be used in soap for different qualities of the soap.
